about

In December of 2020, my uncle Rusty Riggen died in the explosion of his home. I was told he was a gifted guitarist. I never heard him play a note.

I have seen the guitar he played on as a little boy in his parents’ home. The strings are rusted through but you can see where the fingerboard has been worn glossy by a thousand hours spent in play in that house.

I stayed with his parents for some time to help ease them through the enormity of their grief. I took to practicing and playing a lot of guitar while we sat together doing nothing in particular in the stillness after. I took to the songs which were in the air with them—songs I had heard as a little boy as lullabies or little incidental tunes, songs which they knew from their own living. Guitar filled the house up again.

When I returned to Chicago, I recorded those songs in early morning sessions in my living room. They are collected here.
